Coastal & data systems

Abhi Mehrotra

Clean data for messy rivers.

Undergraduate data science researcher at the LSU Center for River Studies. Sensor pipelines, sponge diversity, and generative AI where it helps the record — not where it replaces it.

  • Python · Research · Data

    Hydrograph vs. Seatek sensors

Links river stage with Seatek bed-level sensors to read sediment dynamics and channel morphology, alongside the physical model at the LSU Center for River Studies.

  • Python · Data · Research

    Series correction

Detects jumps, gaps, and outliers in Seatek time series and corrects them before they reach the next analysis. Aimed at cleaner inputs for workflows like NESST II.

  • R · Data · Research

    Seatek analysis

The R tier of the sensor stack: process the series and write the Excel workbooks collaborators actually open. Sits beside the Python visualization work.

  • R · Research · Data

    Louisiana freshwater sponges

Field surveys, drone flights, lab upkeep, and a barcoding database for the state’s freshwater sponges. Includes an R project site and mentoring for newer researchers.

  • Python · Security · Automation

    Email security pipeline

A self-hosted, containerized watcher for suspicious mail. Several detection layers, then a triage path that stays on infrastructure I control.

  • Shell · Automation · Security

    personal-config

A scripted macOS setup: SSH, maintenance, VPN, and DNS notes, written so a new machine is a document instead of a weekend.

  • Python · Fork · Security · Automation

    ctrld-sync

Small Python utility that keeps Control D folders aligned with remote block lists. A fork I run for DNS filtering.

  • Swift · Fork · Automation

    RepoPrompt CE

Working fork of RepoPrompt Community Edition: a Mac app for handing repository context to coding agents, with an MCP CLI.

02 — Background

The measurements, then the tools.

I study coastal systems at LSU and build the software that makes the measurements usable. At the Center for River Studies that is the Lower Mississippi River Physical Model: 10,000 square feet, one year of the river in about an hour, acoustic sensors lined up with the Corps gages. The center is a partnership with the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority.

The code beside it — hydrograph against Seatek sensors, jump and gap correction, an R workbook tier — is there so the next person can rerun the analysis without reconstructing my notebook. Generative AI sits in the same stack when it helps: prompting, IBM Granite, and the AI Risk Atlas. It does not get the last word.

Research was not the plan. Dr. Mary Miller’s biology lab put me on the Louisiana Freshwater Sponge Project through BRCC’s Aspire program. I was the first computer science student on it. Since May 2021 I have mentored newer researchers: fieldwork, drone flights, lab safety, a barcoding record, and an R site. The talks ran from Phoenix to Leiden.

Before that I spent almost seven years at Banana Republic in Baton Rouge, from brand associate to general manager, then a year framing at Hobby Lobby. Hiring and running a floor still shows up in how I want a project to work: scoped, documented, and usable by someone who was not in the room.

  • Scoped, issue-sized tasks.
  • Readable code and a path to reproduce it.
  • Documentation a collaborator in another field can follow.
